The early formative evaluations (see Chapter
4) involved interviewing users after their search session, using a printed
log of events as an aide-memoire. At one point during the project some
code was included in the interface script to automate this process.
Logged events were grouped into logical units which were displayed as a
series of separate pages with explanatory headings, and buttons were
provided to allow the user to move from one page to the next. The lower
part of the screen was available for making notes during an interview. It
was intended that both the log and the annotations should be written to a
file as a permanent record of the session. In the event this code was not
used, as it was decided that the final summative evaluation would be based
on logged but unsupervised sessions.
