Following the entry of the initial query, the system returns not only a set of documents but also a set of thesaurus terms which match or partly match the query. These are presented in a list at the bottom left of the main window. Users can click on any term in this list to produce a pop-up menu, which gives options to add the term to the current query or initiate thesaurus navigation.
Lead-in terms are displayed in white and cannot be selected for any purpose --- they appear in the list only to explain the presence of the corresponding preferred terms, which may have no obvious connection with the query. (See section 2.3.1 for details of the algorithmic treatment of lead-in terms.)
Originally this list was entitled Thesaurus Terms and was displayed to the right of the current query list but after the first formative evaluation (see Chapter 4) it was decided to move it below the current query and to rename it Suggested Words.
