It was decided to abandon the cooperative evaluation method because it was felt that users would act more spontaneously when not in close contact with the experimenter. Instead, they were asked to carry out their intended search, taking as long or short a time as they wished. The experimenter would then go and sit some way away from the catalogue where she was not able to observe the participant, who could then freely explore the system.
