Features and Functionality

As the project progressed it became necessary to decide which facilities were essential in the experimental system, and which would be developed only if there was time. The following were considered indispensible and have been implemented:

• display of suggested terms from the thesaurus,
• thesaurus navigation,
• term addition and deletion,
• dynamic term extraction and incremental query expansion,
• hit-list messages to indicate how well sets of documents match the query,
• printing or mailing of selected documents,
• an option to start a different search with a new query,
• transaction logging for data analysis.
