Only one user in this evaluation navigated the thesaurus. This might have been due to lack of positive encouragement --- users were required to highlight an appropriate term and then select the ``Thesaurus'' button. Later versions of the interface included a standard instruction to click a word or phrase to see the associated choices. For thesaurus terms, the resulting pop-up menu presented thesaurus navigation as an option in the hope that users might be more inclined to experiment.
The user who navigated the thesaurus did not realise that she had to exit from it before searching for documents containing her selected terms. The interface was later changed so that users could carry out a search without quitting the thesaurus.
