Apart from searching and viewing documents, usage of the various system functions was variable. The most popular option was viewing the titles list: ten users selected this to look at search results in a list rather than one by one. Altogether nine users expanded their search, although there were indications from the think-aloud that few were sure what was going to happen when they did so. Disappointingly, only one user navigated the thesaurus, and it was clear from the think-aloud that most participants did not realise it was there. Six users added, and five users deleted, terms. Only one reinstated a previously-deleted term --- a facility later removed from the system.
The detailed results presented in the following sections are based on the questions listed in section 4.1 above. They assess the problems encountered by users, and describe some of the consequent changes made to the interface for later experiments.
